SANTA CRUZ
Cerro Vanguardia : It is a gold and silver mining concession which includes 514 square miles. It is, in terms of its projection, the leading precious metals mine in the country, begun in 1997, the collection began a year later and reach its life until 2027. The operation involves open pit mining, which uses cyanide. There is very little information about its working and its implication on the environment. This is due to two reasons: it is located in the Patagonian desert, the nearest town (Puerto San Julián) is located 150 kilometers from the site. The other reason for the misinformation: a project launched by the former governor and current president, Nestor Kirchner. There are no data on their turnover. Only owned by Anglo Gold Ashanti (a consortium of UK and South Africa), with participation of the province.
